This month…
What a month!
October has been and will continue to be a busy month at D.E.S.K. Please check the D.E.S.K. website for pictures from and details about all of the events.
Thank you to everyone who is helping out during the month of October!
Returning to Slifka
On October 22, D.E.S.K. will return to the Silfka Center for Jewish Life (80 Wall St) on the Yale campus. Traditionally, this has been the location of D.E.S.K.’s kosher kitchen, which is coordinated by Yale students. This year, Eliza Schafler (eliza.schafler@yale.edu) is D.E.S.K.’s Yale coordinator. If you are a student or a member of a student group and you would like to volunteer on Sundays, please email Eliza.
The Slifka meals are a Yale Hunger Heroes initiative. A schedule of D.E.S.K.’s Slifka meals is available on the D.E.S.K. website, and remember, when Silfka is closed, D.E.S.K. serves its meal at the D.E.S.K. Dining Hall (311 Temple St).
Friday Dinners Starting at United Church
Friday night meals at United Church (323 Temple St) will begin again on October 20, 2006, under the leadership of the Yale undergraduate group Yale Hunger Heroes. The Hunger Heroes’ coordinator for this year is Julia Galeota (julia.galeota@yale.edu). If you are a Yale student and would like to help out with Friday night meals, please email Julia. A schedule of Friday meals is available on the D.E.S.K. website.
“Flip Flop Friday” Fundraiser
On Monday, October 23, Karen Kravetz of the New Haven County Bar Associations Public Service Committee present D.E.S.K. with a check for $1,191 at the D.E.S.K. evening meal at Trinity Church on the Green. The money was raised by the association through their “Flip Flop Friday” fundraiser, and it will be used to replace the old cooking utensils in D.E.S.K.’s central kitchen (311 Temple St). The New Haven County Bar Association pledges its continued support of D.E.S.K. into 2007.
Thanks & Recognition
Temple Emmanuel
In celebration of Yom Kippur, Temple Emmanuel’s congregation held a kosher food drive for D.E.S.K. This has become an annual event for this congregation and the kosher food is used in the D.E.S.K. kosher kitchen on Sundays at the Silfka Center for Jewish Life on the Yale campus.
Celebrate the Harvest
Come “Celebrate the Harvest” at Center Church on the Green (250 Temple St) on Sunday, November 12 at 3:00 p.m. with the Duke’s Men at Yale! “The Duke’s Men at Yale,” an a capella singing group, will perform a variety of musical selections.
Admission will be free for those who bring a can or package of non-perishable food as a donation to D.E.S.K.’s pantry.
Cook & Care “Walk-a-Thon”
The Cook & Care “Walk-a-Thon,” which took place on Sunday, October 15, was a great success. St. Luke’s Steel Drum Band was there, and participants also enjoyed sunny weather and the music of banjo players.
D.E.S.K. would like to thank a few of its board members—Bill Hyde, Liz Cox, Blanche Baldwin, Octavious McAuley, and Alex Wellek—for all their help on the day of event. Pictures are available on the D.E.S.K. website.
Alpha Phi Omega
D.E.S.K. would like to extend a special thanks to the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity of Quinnipiac University, whose members helped with everything at the Cook & Care “Walk-a-Thon.” Thanks so much!
Youth with a Mission
Youth with a Mission is once again volunteering every week at the D.E.S.K. central kitchen and pantry. Members of the group haul, stock, and bag food every Tuesday afternoon. The volunteers are always cheery and great to work with; thanks for coming back!
