Thanks and Recognition
Queens and Screams—A Royal Halloween Party
Saturday, October 18, was a “scream” at Elks Lodge #25 (524 State Street), thanks to this festive halloween fundraiser hosted by the Imperial Sovereign Court of all of Connecticut. The Reigning Beneficiaries of the event were:

    •    The Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen
    •    The Hartford Gay and Lesbian Health Collective
    •    The Flock Theater
    •    The PediPal Program of the CT VNA Partners

Everyone, including those Elks, danced and laughed away this magical evening.

DESK would like to thank Board Member Michele Reynard for taking great photos and members of the Elks Lodge #25 for providing a venue.

Cook and Care Walk-A-Thon 2008
Each year, the Cook and Care Walk-A-Thon raises money to benefit four community service organizations: Community Soup Kitchen, Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen, Interfaith Volunteer Care Givers, FISH of Greater New Haven.

This year’s three-mile walk, held on October 19, was a great success, thanks to the sunshine and the many supportive participants. DESK would also like to thank board members the following board members for helping on the day of the event: Blanche Baldwin, Bill Hyde, Jr., Elizabeth Duryea, Liz Cox, and Scot McLean. A special thanks also goes out to Elks Lodge #25 for lending their chairs!

Thanksgiving Celebration
You’re invited to join DESK for a Thanksgiving celebration on Thursday, November 27, at the DESK dinning hall for a blessing and dinner starting at noon. Parking is available across the street from 311 Temple Street in the Yale lot. We will need donations of food and help preparing over 400 hot turkey meals on Thanksgiving morning so that volunteers may deliver meals to those in need throughout the greater New Haven area.

Sign up to volunteer for this event through your congregation, or contact the office of Center Church on the Green at 203-787-0121.

This event is sponsored by Interfaith Cooperative Ministries, so please do not direct your contact DESK’s Jeanne if you are planning to volunteer this Thanksgiving.

Current Needs
Annual Letter Appeal
In November, DESK will begin its Annual Letter Appeal. Remember: the largest percentage of DESK funding comes from private donations, and without your help, DESK will close. We know times are hard for all families and businesses, but please try to donate something to DESK this year so that we can continue providing invaluable emergency food services for the desperately needy in the New Haven community!

Matching Grant Donation Opportunities
An anonymous donor has pledged to match $1,000 in donations to DESK, so please consider donating now for a double benefit!

Additionally, The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven has a grant program in which DESK will participate for the third year in a row, which will match any new donations made this November and December up to $10,000! DESK sincerely hopes to qualify by raising the $10,000 during the first part of its Annual Letter Appeal, so please, if you know of any individual or business that might like to help DESK take advantage of this opportunity, please contact Director@downtowneveningsoupkitchen.com.

Volunteers
As always, DESK can use help from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, at 311 Temple Street. For more information, contact Jeannemariemay@aol.com.

Friday and Sunday Meals
DESK’s Sunday meals have resumed at the Joseph A. Silfka Center. Contact Liz for volunteer opportunities.

The Yale Hunger Heroes also serves meals on Fridays, and any interested Yalies should contact Josh Purtle or Efan Wu for volunteer opportunities.

Kitchen and Pantry
Conducting a food drive with your school, church, or business is a great way to help keep food on DESK’s shelves for the weekly food pantry and daily evening meals. We can even pick up donated items on weekdays! From experience, we have found that the best time to conduct food drives is the week before Thanksgiving, but please hold the food until the week after Thanksgiving if you’d like us to come and pick it up. DESK staff is too busy the week of Thanksgiving itself to accommodate food drives, pick-ups, and storage.

Email JeanneMarieMay@aol.com for more information.

New Board Members
Congratulations to two new members of the DESK Board: Hans Anderson and Michelle Reynard. Hans is starting into his fourth year of service to DESK as its webmaster, and he now joins the DESK Board to continue his support in other ways. Michelle Reynard is no stranger to DESK either, having often been a part of scene at DESK events, where she takes professional photos at no cost to DESK. Michelle is also a regular Tuesday kitchen volunteer who has taken an interest in the “greening of DESK.”
