Volunteering

DESK’s efforts are focused on securing the resources necessary to continue its services. Obtaining financial assistance through donations, fund raisers, and grants provides DESK with a stable financial base. Volunteer participation and community service efforts supplement DESK’s human resources and facilitate operations. Specific contributions that enable DESK to continue with its normal operations and services include shopping for, preparing, storing, stocking, and serving food and venue maintenance.

DESK depends on the following organizations as venue sites: the Joseph Silifka Center for Jewish Life, Trinity Episcopal Church on the Green, First & Summerfield United Methodist Church, and the parish houses of United Church and Center Church.

DESK secures community service resources from Project Apoyo, Aspirations, the New Haven County Bar Association, the Foote School, Jr. Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, New Haven’ court-appointed programs, and various education institutions. Volunteers and community service individuals from these groups complete the tasks that enable DESK to fulfill its mission. In addition, the Yale School of Nursing provides daily medical screening at all of DESK’s evening meals.
